Northview Bank Lends in Bemidji

Known as the “First City on the Mississippi,” Bemidji is a thriving college town of 14,000 people that booms in the summertime thanks to its unique blend of scenery, recreation, and culture.

In the summer months, vacationers love to bike the 112-mile Paul Bunyan trail, head to the enticingly fun Paul Bunyan Land amusement park, explore the Mississippi headwaters in Itasca State Park, or enjoy one of the many family-owned resorts nearby.

Winter brings hunting, icefishing, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and curling—Bemidji is the US curling capital for a reason.

The lake situation near Bemidji could best be described as “an embarrassment of riches.” Lake Bemidji is a big one at 6,500 acres. It has incredible fishing for walleye and perch and is known as a trophy musky lake. Lake Irving is a natural lake on the Mississippi River within the city of Bemidji that is known as a good early-season walleye lake and also offers great icefishing close to downtown.

Cass Lake is a 16,000 acre monster on the Mississippi River. Its water levels are controlled by a dam upstream and one downstream. Cass Lake has excellent fishing for walleye, northern pike, and musky.

Leech Lake, near the city of Walker, is one of the major sporting lakes in the state at 110,000 acres. It is the third-largest lake to be located entirely within the state. Known as a tremendous multispecies fishery year-round, it is a true Minnesota classic.

Beltrami Lake is a 700-acre lake that sits 10 miles north of Bemidji in the 11-lake Turtle Lake Chain. Most of the shoreline on Beltrami is privately owned as a moderate number of cabins dot the lakeshore. Like many of the lakes in the area, Beltrami is a good multispecies fishery.

The Woman Lake Chain—comprised of Child, Girl, Little Woman, and Woman Lakes—is comprised of class 22 lakes, which means they are very large, deep, and irregularly shaped with clear water. In other words, great for fishing, icefishing, and recreational boating.

At 2,200 acres, Kabekona Lake is nice sized, although it looks small next to the other giants near Bemidji. Kabekona enjoys an above-average fishery and exceptional water quality, making it a great option for an enjoyable day out on the water.
