Both Highway 169 and Highway 1 dead end in Ely and beyond the town is hundreds of thousands acres of wilderness stretching all the way to Canada. Nature and solitude abound in Ely, making it a mecca for fishermen, outdoorsmen, naturalists, and hunters alike. Cabins for sale or for rent run the gamut from rustic and remote to modern Northwoods-inspired design.

Ely is most famous for being the gateway to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area and Wilderness (BWCAW), a wilderness area with no roads, resorts, or private cabins that is accessible only by canoe. The town of Ely is populated with outfitters ready to equip the adventurers headed out by canoe to enjoy some tranquility and catch some fish. The boulder-lined Snowbank Lake is one of the larger lakes in the BWCA at nearly 5,000 acres. The Superior National Forest, well over a million acres, is known for its amazing boreal forest, clean lakes, and history.

If you want to fish or experience nature without going too far out of town, try one of the nearby lakes teeming with gamefish including walleyes, northern pike, smallmouth bass, and lake trout. Burntside Lake is over 7,000 acres and enjoys clarity over 20 feet. The White Iron Chain has over 11,000 acres of sportfishing and water recreation opportunities and includes White Iron Lake, Farm Lake, Garden Lake, and South Farm Lake. The northern edge of Ely is nestled on the shore of Shagawa Lake, which is absolutely loaded with walleye.
